Our client sought to validate two early-stage digital ecosystem concepts designed to simplify financial and operational management for small and mid-sized businesses within the legal services and property investment sectors.
The objective was to understand how decision-makers currently manage workflows, adopt digital tools, and navigate operational challenges while assessing openness to a more integrated solution. Vertex Expert Network supported this initiative by connecting the client with verified decision-makers across both sectors, enabling direct access to real-world, experience-driven insights.
The study aimed to conduct two rounds of in-depth qualitative research to explore existing processes, pain points, and decision-making behaviors across:
- Small to mid-sized UK legal practices
- Active property investors and landlords
Each participant completed two 60-minute interviews, allowing for deeper exploration of workflows, financial management practices, and digital readiness over time.
Vertex applied a highly targeted recruitment strategy to ensure only the most relevant profiles were engaged.
For legal services, participants included Partners, Managing Partners, Practice Managers, and Finance Managers representing firms across different revenue bands and practice areas. These included conveyancing, commercial law, family law, probate, and related disciplines.
For the property investment group, participants included SME landlords, portfolio owners, and co-decision-makers managing portfolios of 5 to 20residential or commercial units. Structures ranged from limited companies and LLPs to established landlord entities.
All participants were screened to confirm:
- UK-based operations
- Appropriate turnover or asset exposure
- Direct involvement in financial or operational decisions
To capture meaningful variation, Vertex applied a two-sector screening framework.
Within legal services, participants represented a mix of digital maturity—from fully cloud-based systems to hybrid workflows. Within property investment, participants reflected differing refinancing cycles, portfolio complexities, and financial challenges.
This approach ensured a balanced and representative view across both ecosystems.
Vertex managed all operational aspects of the study, ensuring a smooth and compliant research process.
Participants were verified for technical readiness, including stable internet connectivity and appropriate interview environments. Interviews were scheduled across two consecutive weeks, with all recording permissions and compliance requirements managed in advance.
All participants were successfully recruited within the first ten days of fieldwork.
The study delivered rich, qualitative insights into how legal and real estate professionals manage day-to-day operations and evaluate new digital solutions.
Key insights included:
- Operational bottlenecks within existing financial workflows
- Gaps in current digital tools and banking relationships
- Varying levels of readiness for ecosystem-based solutions
- Factors that would encourage adoption of an integrated platform
These findings provided clarity on both immediate pain points and longer-term opportunities.

The insights enabled stronger alignment between product development and real-world requirements, supporting more confident decisions around ecosystem design, positioning, and market entry.
